Saratoga Honda: Creative Design Blends Corporate Guidelines with City Vernacular

Car Dealership Design

Balzer and Tuck helped the owner of Saratoga Honda expand their existing facility and balance “prototypical” Honda dealership requirements with the nuances of Saratoga Springs’ regulatory design review board. Collaborating with community and corporate stakeholders, Balzer and Tuck’s environmentally-conscious design allowed the owner to meet increasing dealer inventory requirements while still reducing energy and water use and waste.

Key Challenges and Solutions

  • Through selective demolition and project phasing, Balzer and Tuck guided this significant expansion to completion without disrupting business.
  • The dealership features a signature auto porch for showcasing new vehicles. This outdoor space was designed to be reminiscent of historic porches in the neighboring Saratoga Spa State Park.
  • Focused on first impressions and the client’s sales opportunities, Balzer and Tuck used transparent glass walls, auto-open doors, and other modern design elements to immediately welcome visitors and transition them to the one and a half-story showroom.

Project Details

  • Tripled the size of the building to 44,000 square feet
  • Customer welcome center and lounge
  • Covered customer pull-in service bay
  • Auto-detailing and vehicle parts storage areas
  • Administrative offices
  • One and a half-story showroom
  • Application of modern energy, water, and waste best practices to measurably reduce environmental impact
